He Promised to Help Us Through It
There’s a saying Christians repeat all the time:
“God will never give you more than you can handle.”
The problem is—God never actually said that.
In fact, sometimes life absolutely is more than we can handle.
There are seasons when the burden feels too heavy, the road feels too long, and we simply do not have enough strength in ourselves to carry what is in front of us.
And maybe that is part of the point.
If we could handle everything on our own, we wouldn’t need Him.
God never promised to help us go around every problem.
He never promised we would always be able to climb over it.
He never said He would dig a tunnel so we could crawl under it.
But over and over again, Scripture shows us this:
He will be with us THROUGH it.
Isaiah 41:10 says:
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Notice what God says.
He doesn’t say, “You’ll never face anything difficult.”
He says, “I will strengthen you.”
He doesn’t say, “You’ll never become overwhelmed.”
He says, “I will help you.”
Deuteronomy 31:8 tells us:
“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
Sometimes our prayer is, “God, get me out of this!”
And sometimes He does.
But other times His answer is:
“I’m going through it with you.”
Psalm 46:1 says:
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
It doesn’t say He is only present once the trouble is gone.
He is present IN the trouble.
Psalm 121:1–2 says:
“I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”
And Jesus Himself said in Matthew 11:28:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Jesus didn't say, “Come to Me once you have everything handled.”
He said come weary.
Come burdened.
Come when you are exhausted.
Come when you don’t know what to do next.
Come when the situation is bigger than you.
That familiar saying probably comes from a misunderstanding of 1 Corinthians 10:13, where Paul talks specifically about temptation and says God will provide a way of escape so we can endure it.
That verse does not say we will never experience circumstances beyond our own ability to handle.
Actually, some of the greatest moments of faith happen when we finally have to admit:
“God, I cannot do this without You.”
Maybe you're standing in front of something today that feels impossible.
You don’t know how you’re going to fix it.
You don’t know how you’re going to carry it.
You don’t know how you’re going to make it to the other side.
You may not be able to.
But God can.
And He has promised that you do not have to walk through it alone.
You may not be able to go around it.
You may not be able to climb over it.
You may not be able to crawl underneath it.
But with His strength, His presence, His grace, and His hand holding you—
you can go THROUGH it.
Because the promise was never:
“You can handle everything.”
The promise is:
“I will help you.”
And sometimes the very thing that is more than we can handle becomes the place where we discover just how much we can trust the One who is carrying us.
You were never meant to handle everything alone.
